The first game of the 2021 NWHL season was the inaugural game for the Toronto Six. The Six took on the Metropolitan Riveters in game one.
First Period
The puck dropped and the Metropolitan Riveters went to work right away scoring the opening goal of the season, and the first goal allowed by Toronto.
Number 5 Leila Kilduff, Metropolitan Riveters defender buries the first goal for her team and the NWHL season. Toronto Six forward Emma Greco takes the first penalty of the season, an interference minor but no harm was done. Riveters defender Leila Kilduff would add another before the end of the period making it 2-0 heading into the second frame.
Second Period
The Second period some chances going both ways, with the Toronto Six almost scoring their first goal on the power play. That goal was denied by a diving Riveters player and kept the score 2-0 for Metropolitan after two periods.
Third Period
The Metropolitan Riveters add insurance in the third period, forward Emily Janiga buries the third tally of the game. The Riveters shutout the Toronto Six in Toronto’s Inaugural game in the NWHL. It was not due to a lack of effort by the Toronto Six as they outshot the Riveters and had their chances. Toronto put 40 shots on net but Sonjia Shelly turned them away for the shutout.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow and the Toronto Six are looking for their first goal and win in the teams history.
